An update on Desmonda, our white-front amazon.

She is still not available for adoption, but we now are closer to that eventual date. Please realize that this is not a tame bird--she is at best, semi-tame. She may (probably) tame down somewhat with time and careful gentle handling, but she will (likely) never be a hand-tame cuddly pet. This is not a bird for an inexperienced owner, nor one for someone who wants a cuddly chatty pet. She'll make someone an enjoyable companion, but only someone who will accept her limitations, personality-wise.
She did check out relatively "okay" on her medical visits, and has now been diagnosed as hypothyroid. She's been started on daily medication for this condition, which should (hopefully) dramatically improve her appearance, etc. Hypothyroidism is still a fairly uncommon to diagnose and treat in birds, so we have to wait and see (somewhat).
As to when exactly she will be available for adoption or what her adoption fee will be, we cannot say just yet--hopefully will be able to add more as she gets a few weeks of medicine "under her belt" and we see how she will respond to treatment.
What we definitely can say is that she will be adoption only to someone within reasonable driving distance of mid-state SC. Her new owner will need to be willing and able to restrain her daily and give her oral medication (not difficult but if the person doing it were afraid of the bird or uncomfortable/untrained, it could result in injury to the bird or human). And again, it will need to be an experienced bird person who is more interested in an "open cage" living-room companion than a "lap bird."
